Retro: a modern reproduction
A retro shirt is a newly manufactured reproduction of an old design. It looks like the classic, but it was made recently. Retro shirts are usually cheaper, easy to buy in your size, and perfectly good if you just want the look of a legendary kit to wear.
There is nothing wrong with retro. It is simply a different thing. The mistake is paying vintage prices for a retro shirt, or assuming a reproduction will hold value the way an original does. It generally will not.
So which should you buy?
- Want to wear it casually and not worry about it? A retro shirt is ideal, affordable and available in modern sizes.
- Want a genuine piece of football history? Go vintage. You are buying the original, and well-documented originals have historically held value better than reproductions, though future value is never guaranteed.
- Want the ultimate version? That is match worn, an original shirt actually worn by a player in a game. It is the rarest and most collectible category of all.
How to tell them apart
Vintage shirts show their age honestly: period correct fabric, manufacturing details true to the era, and often small signs of wear. Retro reproductions tend to use modern fabric and finishing, and the tags will usually give away a recent production date. When in doubt, ask the seller directly, and buy from someone who deals in originals and will tell you plainly which is which.
